From the earliest recorded time, people have made personal ornaments from the beautiful rocks and crystals that they have found around them. In ancient cultures, some of these stones became very important to the people and were thought to have magical properties. The healing and beneficial attributes of gemstones are now again being investigated, and many people are convinced that they can help in these stressful times.

Abalone Natural peacock shades with a pearly lustre.
Agate - in general  

A form of chalcedony that exists in many different varieties and colours. An alternative birth stone for Aquarius. Thought to strengthen the body and mind; also to generate courage. Aids the ability to recognise the truth and accept circumstances. Promotes energy; very grounding.

 Agate - Blue Lace Opaque banded shades of milky white and baby blue. Banishes fears and promotes courage. Calms and increases self esteem. A stone for health and good fortune.
Agate - Botswana Opaque banded shades of grey, coffee and cream. All agates are thought to strengthen and tone the body and mind; they are grounding yet also energising; they help to recognise the truth and accept situations and circumstances. Botswana Agate helps with oxygenation of the body's systems and encourages a connection to nature, trees and the plant kingdom.
Agate - Pink Botswana Opaque banded shades of grey, coffee and cream, with definite tints of soft pink.
Agate - Crazy Lace Banded opaque shades of yellow, cream, brown, grey and black.
Agate - Purple Crazy Lace Banded opaque shades of yellow, cream, purple and grey.
Agate - Black Dragonscale Opaque shades of black and grey with distinctive 'scaley' markings. Available in glossy and matt finishes. Usually dyed and heat treated.
Agate - Blue Dragonscale Opaque shades of denim blue with distinctive 'scaley' markings. Available in glossy and matt finishes. Usually dyed and heat treated.
Agate - Red Dragonscale Opaque shades of yellow, orange and red with distinctive 'scaley' markings. Available in glossy and matt finishes. Usually dyed and heat treated.
Agate - Fire Translucent shades of orange with pale 'scaley' markings.
Agate - Green Glossy, opaque shades of apple green with hints of lemon and grey. Usually dyed.
Agate - Green Moss Subtle shades of green and grey. Encourages persuasiveness and improves self-esteem. Thought to encourage the acquisition of riches.
Agate - Silver Lace Opaque banded shades of black, grey and white.
Amazonite Pale shades of opaque sea green. The 'thinker's stone'. Encourages creativity, attracts success. Uplifting.
Black Gold Amazonite  Pale shades of opaque sea green with striking accents of black, charcoal and rich rusty brown.
Amber amber cab.jpg (23215 bytes) Translucent shades of gold, orange and brown. Great for absentmindedness. Helps the body heal itself by turning negative energy into positive. Thought to bring good luck to warriors and said to calm the nerves.
Amethyst Subtle shades of pale translucent purple. The birth stone for February and also for Aquarius. An alternative birth stone for Pisces. The traditional love token for Valentine's Day. Amethyst is a stone for change. It is thought to promote psychic and spiritual awareness, intuition and creativity, inner peace and the imagination. Is often used for meditation. May also helpful for insomnia, grief and high blood pressure and to boost the immune system.
Ametrine Subtle shades of pale translucent purple and yellow. This stone is comprised of amethyst and citrine, which can be found together where conditions are right. May also be created when amethyst is heat treated.
Apatite Shades of vivid translucent turquoise blue/green.
Aquamarine Pale shades of translucent blue-green. The birth stone for March and also for Pisces. Closely associated with the sea, it may help to calm the nerves and lift the spirits. It is thought to quicken the intelligence and lead to greater self knowledge. Preserves innocence.
Aragonite Aragonite Rich opaque butter yellow.
Aragonite - Pink Rich opaque shades of soft glowing pink.
Aventurine - Green Translucent shades of cool green. An alternative birth stone for August. An alternative birth stone for Libra. Soothes and relaxes, acting as a general tonic. Supposed to bring good fortune and encourage creativity, independence and serenity. Also good for skin conditions and optical disorders. Reduces anxiety. Thought to bring adventure in love and sport.
Aventurine - Red

Translucent shades of rich warm red. Helps when looking at situations in detail, magnifying those aspects of importance. Encourages self reflection. Can be used when fasting, to reduce hunger.

Bloodstone Opaque shades of dark green with red or orange speckles. An alternative birth stone for March. Also known as Heliotrope. This form of jasper is thought to cleanse and ground the physical body, and may help blood disorders. May increase courage and provide mental balance. Thought to provide inner guidance, revitalise friendships, relationships and all forms of love.
Blue Topaz

Pale shades of translucent pale blue (usually irradiated to enhance the colour). The birth stone for November and also for Scorpio. Encourages creativity, especially in writing. Helps focus on life's path and increases alignment with the higher self. Encourages peacefulness, creativity and self-expression. It soothes the emotions and is a good detoxifying stone, regulating the digestive system.  Often used as a charm against fires and accidents.

Calcite - Mangano  

Opaque shades of soft baby pink. Thought to bring love, gentleness, compassion and patience. A mental and emotional balancer. Soothes the intensity of all feelings.

Calcite - Orange Translucent shades of orange. Thought to be uplifting. Brings joy, good humour and happiness.
Calcite - Yellow Translucent shades of yellow. Associated with the spine, bones and joints. Thought to decalcify joints, and detoxify the spleen, pancreas and kidneys. Emotionally balancing. Helps to reduce stress and alleviate fears.
Carnelian Translucent shades of red and orange. An alternative birth stone for July and also for Virgo. May improve alertness, concentration and energy levels. Connects you with your inner self, encouraging joy, sociability and warmth. Anti-depressant and good for rheumatic pains and arthritis. Also used for impotence.
Charoite  Intense opaque shades of rich purple.
Chrysocolla Opaque shades of blue-green. Releases stress and anger and balances the emotions. Thought to heal loss, guilt, hurt and fear. May prevent ulcers and aid digestive problems. Helps with expressing feelings and verbal and artistic creativity when worn around the throat.
Chrysoprase

Shades of both translucent and opaque apple green. An alternative birth stone for May. Calming and balancing. Thought to enhance flexibility and dexterity. Encourages generosity, wisdom and self-confidence. Thought to lift the spirits, ease depression and aid fertility. Ensures balance and perspective in business dealings and personal affairs.

Citrine Pale translucent smoky yellow. An alternative birth stone for November. Controls the emotions and prevents self-destructiveness. Eases toxic conditions and may help with diabetes. Encourages you to be nice to yourself.
Diamond   Traditionally ice-white, but also available in black, pink, champagne, cognac, canary, red and blue. Some of these colours are achieved by heat treatment. The birth stone for April and also for Aries. A symbol of purity, it brings love and clarity into partnerships, bonding relationships. Diamond is a sign of commitment and fidelity. It imparts fearlessness and clears emotional and mental pain, reducing fear and bringing about new beginnings. It may stimulate creativity, inventiveness, imagination and ingenuity. It may bring clarity of mind and aid enlightenment. It is thought to purify and detoxify all of the body’s systems, rebalancing the metabolism and building up stamina.
Dumortierite Opaque deep blue. Often translucent in higher quality stones. Helps control excitability and encourage patience. Thought to help reduce stubborn traits and tendencies.
Emerald Vibrant shades of 'included' and translucent green; the colour varies depending on the country of origin. The inclusions are referred to as the 'jardin' or 'garden'. The birth stone for May and also for Taurus. It promotes unity, friendship and domestic bliss, keeping partnerships in balance. It is thought to stimulate the heart chakra, having a healing effect on the emotions as well as the physical heart.  It may ensure physical, emotional and mental equilibrium, bringing harmony to all areas of life. It is thought to strengthen memory and impart clarity of thought, inspiring a deep inner knowledge, promoting truth and discernment. It is thought to treat disorders of the heart, lungs, spine and muscular system and aid recovery after infectious illness.
Feldspar Soft creamy opaque background colour with flecks of rich espresso coffee.
Fluorite Subtle shades of translucent purple and green. Absorbs negative energies and opens the body’s chakras. Used for balancing and focusing energies; often used for meditation. Good for physical and mental healing.  Strengthens bone tissue.
Fossil Coral Opaque neutral shades of brown and cream with distinctive fossil markings.
Garnet Deep blackberry red. The birth stone for January and also for Capricorn. Thought to increase determination, energy, imagination and courage; may attract love and compassion. Helps in dreams and past-life recall. May protect against infection and purify the blood.  
Garnet - Green Subtle shades of translucent yellow-green. Also called grossular garnet.
Garnet - Hessonite Smokey shades of translucent orange.
Garnet - Spessartite Rich translucent burnt orange. Also called mandarin garnet.
Haematite Opaque metallic black. An anti-depressant and pain reliever. Strengthens the heart. Promotes confidence, bravery, optimism, personal charisma and self-esteem.
White Howlite

Opaque white with delicate pale grey marbling. Aids and deepens sleep. Gently relieves stress, rage, tension and anxiety. Encourages patience, gentleness and tact. Good for bones, teeth, nursing mothers and for reducing muscle tension.

Iolite Translucent shades of blue, violet and grey. Often called 'water sapphire'. Encourages peace and simplicity. Acts as a detoxifier for addictions, especially alcohol. Helps the subconscious to perceive the truth; a stone of discernment.
Jade Shades of soft green, though also available in red, white and lavender. Thought to attract good luck, protect from spirits and encourage safe journeys.  Encourages wisdom and long life. Good for the kidneys, bladder complaints and feminine problems. Fosters courage, justice, modesty and clarity.
Jasper - in general  

A form of chalcedony that exists in many different varieties and colours. An alternative birth stone for March. Depending on the colour, this stone may stimulate the sense of smell and the immune system, strengthen the liver and gall bladder, and promote general healing and tissue regeneration. Match the colour to the chakra for best effect. The darker colours are thought to be more grounding, but less helpful for healing.

Jasper - Black Opaque black, with a subtle glossy sheen.
Jasper - Bronzite Opaque dark background with bronze and copper coloured flecks and swirls.
Jasper - Cappuccino Opaque coffee and cream shades in wonderful swirling patterns.
Jasper - Fancy

Opaque shades of green, cream, beige and purple. Acts as an anti-depressant and eases worry.

Jasper - Galaxy Swirling opaque patterns of moss green over a deep green/black background. Also called Kambaba jasper.
Jasper - Grey Opaque shades of grey with lighter and darker markings.
Jasper - Ocean A wide range of opaque shades that include greens, cream, pinks and earth tones.
Jasper - Picasso Subtle, muted opaque shades of grey and black, with hints of brown and cream, often with intricate black markings.
Jasper - Pink Zebra Opaque bands of dense black and soft marbled pink. Also called Flamingo stone.
Jasper - Poppy

Rich vibrant shades of opaque orange and russet, often with darker markings. Also called brecciated jasper. Helps to encourage a positive outlook.  Brings contentment and happiness when worn.

Jasper - Porcelain Swirling opaque shades of cream through to dark brown and plum purple.
Jasper - Rainforest Rich opaque shades of green, with shades of orange, cream and white.
Jasper - Red Rich warm opaque red. An alternative birth stone for Aries. Very grounding; it balances physical and emotional needs. It is both invigorating and calming and thought to improve the sense of smell. Said to protect from witchcraft. Also good for controlling excessive bleeding and for digestive and stomach disorders.
Jasper - Ribbon Opaque shades of sage green-grey with swirls and bands of purple chocolate brown.
Jasper - Rocky Butte Earthy opaque shades.
Jasper - Sage Apache Opaque shades of cream, brown, rust and earth colours in a range of abstract patterns.
Jasper - Web Opaque shades of grey with intricate black markings.
Jasper - Zebra

Opaque bands of dense black and white.

Kyanite Shades of 'splintery' blue/grey with hints of orange. Often translucent blue, reminiscent of sapphires, in higher quality stones.
Labradorite - Green

Translucent shades of iridescent green, which flashes of electric blue when moved. Helps when working with others and with changing situations. Relieves insecurity, reduces stress and assists restful sleep. Encourages patience.

Labradorite - Blue Translucent background shades of blue with brighter iridescent blue and gold flashes when moved. Same properties as green labradorite.
Labradorite - Black Muted shades of black and greys with brighter iridescent steel-blue flashes when moved. Also called larvikite. Same properties as green labradorite.
Lapis Lazuli Very bright opaque royal blue, with paler blue and gold markings. An alternative birth stone for September. The stone of friendship, it encourages the ability to communicate openly and to think rationally. Lifts depression and gives hope and self-confidence.  Aids psychic development and helps cut through superficiality to find inner truth. Strengthens the mind and body.
Larimar Soft shades of opaque pale aqua blue.
Leopardskin Rhyolite Gleaming opaque shades of brown, cream, orange, often spotted or in rings.
Lepidolite Soft opaque lavender.
Malachite Banded shades of opaque bright green and black. Thought to raise the spirits and increase health, hope and happiness. Attracts prosperity and success in business. 
Mookaite

Opaque shades of yellow, brown, cream and kidney bean red. The Aboriginal healing stone from the Mooka Creek area of Australia. Thought to be associated with all things sensual and with physical pleasure. Encourages the relationship between the physical and the spiritual aspects of life. Encourages acceptance and affection for one’s physical body. Elevates the spirits during physical activity.

Moonstone Pale translucent white, orange and grey, often with a blue-ish sheen or 'schiller'. The birth stone for Gemini. An alternative birth stone for Cancer. A very feminine stone, it may be good for menstrual problems, thought to encourage fertility and often used to ease childbirth. Thought to be emotionally balancing and nurturing.
Moonstone - Rainbow Milky shades with vivid blue flashes or 'schiller'. Sometimes known as light labradorite.
Mother of Pearl Gleaming shades of white, cream, gold and peacock black. Emotionally soothing. Thought to attract money and wealth. Soothes the emotions, aids sensitivity and relieves stress; often used to protect new born babies.
Muscovite Crystalline crushed raspberry pink.
Mystic Topaz A rainbow of translucent colours. Usually man-made using heat treatment.
Obsidian - Mahogany Opaque rust red and rich black markings. Good for vision work and divination. Reveals subconscious hidden truths and reflects the flaws in one's own nature.
Obsidian - Snowflake Opaque black background with shaded white ‘snowflakes’. An alternative birth stone for Capricorn. A stone with subtle male energies. Encourages the wearer to face responsibilities and the truth. Neutralises negative thoughts and brings insight and understanding. Also good for the intestines, stomach and eye disorders.
Onyx - Black Opaque black, often with some banding. An alternative birth stone for February and also Gemini. Thought to promote self-control and serenity. May ease stress and encourage commitment and devotion to the wearer. Also thought to reduce physical stress and help heart problems and ulcers. 
Onyx - Cafe au Lait Glossy opaque with prominent translucent bands of coffee and cream.
Opal  

A vast variety of background colours, all with a signature play of rainbow colours. Found mainly in Australia and, more recently, the Welo area in Ethiopia. The birth stone for October and for Libra. Opal’s iridescent flashes stimulate the pineal and pituitary glands. It aids balance and eyesight. May be helpful during childbirth. Awakens and helps understanding of psychic intuition and mysticism. Encourages living authentically in feeling and action, with faithfulness and loyalty.

Opal - Peruvian Blue Opaque pale aqua with coffee and cream banding.
Opal - Pink Various shades of opaque soft pink.
Pearl

Many opaque shades with a glossy pearlescent sheen. The birth stone for June. Thought to reduce irritability, focus the attention and encourage personal integrity. Symbolises purity, charity, faith and innocence. May encourage self-love and inner strength. Is though to aid digestive disorders and conditions that affect the soft organs of the body.

Peridot Pale translucent olive green. The birth stone for August and also for Leo. Develops inner vision, counteracts negativity and opens the mind. A good detoxifying stone, it acts as a general tonic for body and mind.
Pyrite

Slightly dull ‘antique’ gold, often with gunmetal and orange markings. Also called ‘Fool’s Gold’. One of the most grounding stones, good for focus, practicality, logic and memory. Encourages improved circulation and is linked with the digestive system. Associated with good communication and friendly exchange of words.

Quartz - Crystal Crystal clear.  An alternative birth stone for April. The ‘King of Gems’. Thought to act as a catalyst, increasing the powers and effects of other stones. Generates energy, helps concentration and focus. May be good for the brain and good for the soul. An excellent channeller of healing. Also thought to be good for mental disorders and psychological problems.
Quartz - Rose Pretty translucent pale pink. Called the ‘Venus Stone’. An alternative birth stone for January and also Taurus. Thought to promote unconditional love and affection and heal emotional pain and the wounds of neglect; encourages tenderness and gentleness. May also be good for reducing trauma, improving fertility, relieving headaches and migraine.
Quartz - Rutile Clear quartz which has needle-like filaments of other black, gold or red crystals running through it. Aids healing, eases bronchial problems and promotes tissue regeneration. Rebalances the life force and is good for communicating with your higher self.
Quartz - Smokey Translucent with grey or brown swirls of colour. A good healer for the abdominal region. Helps absorb negative energies and is a mild sedative and anti-depressant.
Quartz - Strawberry Translucent deep pink that really does look like crushed strawberries. Stimulates the energy centre of the heart allowing the total experience of Love. Good for bringing joy and happiness. It enhances self-esteem and reduces anxiety. It can promote clear thinking and has a calming influence. It is also a stone to encourage romance and can ease tension in an existing relationship. Thought to be good for meditation.
Quartz - Tourmalinated Clear quartz with filaments or bands of black tourmaline running throughout.
Quartz - Whiskey Translucent shades of clear golden brown - like the finest single malt.
Rhodocroisite Rich opaque banded shades of red and pink. De-stresses and provides energy during extreme physical exertion. Encourages a youthful outlook, is antidepressant and speeds up healing.
Rhodonite Opaque shades of pink with black markings. An alternative birth stone for Scorpio. Calms the mind, reduces confusion, improves memory and reduces stress.  Promotes confidence and self-esteem. Closely associated with hearing problems and use of the voice.
Ruby Rich, translucent or 'included' red; the shade varies depending on the country of origin. The birth stone for July and also for Cancer.
The ruby is a stone of nobility and it encourages one to follow bliss. It  is a wonderful stone for the 1st chakra as it stimulates our basic instinct of/for survival. It strengthens both the physical and emotional heart. Ruby brings love, confidence, loyalty, and courage. It instills stamina, vitality and strength. A good stone for removing blocked energies in the reproductive system. It re-energizes after exhaustion. May also be good for balancing blood sugar levels. It may also help to reduce negative thought patterns.
Sandstone - Blue Shades of opaque dark blue with metallic silvery sparkles. Also called Blue Goldstone. A type of glass, first made in the 17th century. Thought to be revitalising; acts to encourage a positive attitude.
Sandstone - Brown Shades of rich orange/brown with coppery metallic sparkles. Also called Goldstone. A type of glass, first made in the 17th century. Gently uplifting. Thought to reduce tension in the stomach and solar plexus. Protects the centre of the body.
Sapphire  

Available in a vast range of colours from ice-white to black, but traditionally blue. The birth stone for September and also for Virgo. It is thought to release mental tension, depression, unwanted thoughts and confusion. Sapphire encourages balance within the body, aligning the physical, mental and spiritual planes, bringing serenity and peace of mind. Sapphire is also known as a ‘stone of prosperity’, attracting gifts of all kinds and fulfilling dreams and desires. Sapphire is thought to treat blood disorders and strengthen the vein walls. It is used for cellular disorders and to calm overactive systems.

Serpentine   Predominantly waxy opaque shades of olive green and brown. Similar in composition to Jade. Also called New Jade, Bowenite and Oil Jade, depending on the colour.
Sodalite Shades of opaque dark indigo denim blue with paler and white markings. An alternative birth stone for Sagittarius. Clears the mind, helps logical thought and reduces over-sensitive reactions. Brings youthful vitality to the wearer. Also lowers blood pressure and improves insomnia.
Sugilite Opaque shades of purple and banded white.
Sunstone

Opaque shades of iridescent orange and peach, which flash gold in the sunlight. Also known as heliolite. Warms the heart and lifts the spirit. A grounding stone that protects and boosts the life force. Good for remembering dreams and meditation.

Tanzanite Translucent shades of intense blue, purple and lavender blue, with darker colours present in higher quality material. Found only in one mine in Tanzania. Recently named as an alternative birth stone for December.
Tiger Iron Opaque bands of metallic black, mustard yellow and russet. Also know as haematite jasper, this stone is a combination of tigers eye, red and yellow jasper, and haematite and so has all the qualities of each stone rolled into one super crystal!
Tigers Eye Shaded bands of opaque brown and yellow. An alternative birth stone for November and also for Leo. Encourages strength, clarity and focus in life, enabling the accomplishment of goals. Increases self-confidence and perception, encourages positive thinking. Also good for hypochondria and psychosomatic conditions. Improves the function of the liver, kidneys and bladder.
Tigers Eye - Blue

Opaque banded shades of blue, gold and yellow. Also called Hawks Eye or Falcons Eye. Thought to deepen meditation and enable the truth in ourselves, others and situations to be more easily seen. Improves perspective. Acts to slow down all the body's systems.

Tigers Eye - Red Opaque banded shades of rich brown, red and orange/gold. A good stone for public speaking, it encourages quick thinking, boosts confidence and helps in understanding the audience’s requirements. May help with self-expression and self-knowledge. Thought to speed up a sluggish metabolism and revitalise the sex drive.
Tourmaline

Translucent shades of mainly pinks, greens and blues, but found in a vast range of colours from clear ice white to black. Some of the rarest gemstones on earth are in the tourmaline family. An alternative birth stone for October. In its many colours it offers a strong protective influence, enhancing sensitivity and comprehension by dispelling fear and negativity. A powerful healer of mental disorders it assists the troubled to find rest and strengthens the ability to meet with changes and new challenges.

Turquoise Various opaque shades of blue-green, often with black markings. The birth stone for December and also for Sagittarius. A powerful protector against environmental pollutants, especially background radiation. Brings wisdom and enhances creative expression, peace of mind, friendship and loyalty.
Unakite Opaque shades of red, orange and green.
